Classical music isn’t only for the concert hall—come experience Steve Reich’s works delivered in full urban flair at Esplanade’s latest flexible performance space.
Hear OpusNovus present Steve Reich’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Double Sextet, and London Sinfonietta’s principal clarinettist Mark van de Wiel perform the dynamic New York Counterpoint as well as the tight interlockings in Clapping Music. Multidisciplinary artist Theemptybluesky will also be presenting bold electronic music sets, accompanied by visual projections designed by Ryan Benjamin Lee.
About OpusNovus OpusNovus is a versatile contemporary music ensemble composed of musicians from Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, NUS. Its programmes often feature works by internationally renowned composers, and lesser-known gems of the contemporary repertoire. OpusNovus also seeks to promote music by composers based in Singapore and around the region, as well as works by conservatory students, faculty and alumni.
The ensemble has collaborated with guest artists and ensembles such as Steven Schick, Ensemble Multilaterale, Trio Surplus, Ensemble Modern, and Wu Xian. OpusNovus is a resident ensemble for the Conservatory’s annual Young Composer’s Academy
About Mark van de Wiel Mark van de Wiel is established as one of Britain’s leading, and most versatile, clarinettists. Since 2000 he has been principal clarinettist with the Philharmonia Orchestra and was appointed principal with the London Sinfonietta in 2002.
As a soloist he has performed with the Philharmonia, London Sinfonietta, London Chamber Orchestra (in La Scala, Milan), Thames Chamber Orchestra, Mozart Festival Orchestra, Welsh National Opera Orchestra, English Classical Players, the Arhus Orchestra, Belgrade Strings, and the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. He is particularly well known for his performances of contemporary music and has given many premieres. Mark van der Wiel has recorded chamber music for EMI, ASV, NMC and Finlandia records, and as a soloist for Olympia and NMC. He broadcasts frequently.
About London Sinfonietta The London Sinfonietta is one of the world’s finest contemporary music ensembles with a reputation built on cutting-edge programming and virtuosic performances. Founded in 1968, the ensemble has commissioned nearly 400 new works, and premiered many hundreds more.
Resident at Southbank Centre and Artistic Associates at Kings Place, with a busy touring schedule across the UK and abroad, its core is 16 Principal Players, representing some of the best solo and ensemble musicians in the world. About Theemptybluesky Mervin Wong, under the alias of Theemptybluesky, is a sonic alchemist best known for his explorative journeys through sound in an evocative and eclectic manner. With a curiosity for blending recorded and synthesised sound, Wong’s full-length debut album Aphelion explores the juxtaposition of musical narratives against organic textures from field recordings to produce a unique electronic sound that is highly emotive.
His other works include creating bespoke music and sound design for film, media, installations, as well as collaborations with performing and visual artists. Wong also actively explores his practice in other forms including light, visuals and design.
About Ryan Benjamin Lee Ryan Benjamin Lee (b.1997) is a moving image artist based in Singapore and Los Angeles whose practice utilises video art, installation, GIF-making, sampling and (re)animation to create a range of media assemblages. Grounded in an interest in material investigation, his artworks explore the relationship between physical and virtual spaces and how our post-internet experiences seamlessly merge the two. As such, his works often have a sculptural or site-specific quality to them.
