CSS Presents: Writing for Saxophone with Samuel Phua


Come learn more about writing for the saxophone with Singapore’s saxophone wunderkind Samuel Phua! Join us in this 90-minute workshop as he explores and demonstrates various saxophone techniques in detail, discusses how to integrate them into your composition or arrangement, and shows how to notate them. You may also catch snippets of him performing on the saxophone!

BIOGRAPHY


Hailed as "Singaporean Saxophone Extraordinaire" by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Samuel Phua 潘培铭 is a recipient of the Singapore National Arts Council Arts Scholarship (Undergraduate) 2017. Samuel is a passionate advocate of contemporary music and has recorded the works of over 30 Singaporean composers to date. He has performed as a soloist with Singapore's top orchestras, bands and choir, including the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of the Music Makers, and The Philharmonic Winds, amongst others. He has performed with the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra as a finalist in the 2020 "Classic Winds" International Saxophone and Clarinet Competition and clinched 4th place in the Asia Pacific Saxophone Competition 2019. In addition to his impressive credentials as a soloist, he has also participated in improvisation projects such as METRIC Intensive Programme in Estonia and Quandary episode 2 with Miao Dance Singapore, organised several solo recitals, co-founded the Xin Saxophone Quartet and Modulah! Collective, served as artistic director of the Protégé Saxophone Ensemble (2015-2017), and served on the artistic committee for the Helsinki Saxophone Orchestra (2018-2019).
