Overview of Projects

The Composers Society of Singapore (CSS) is a non-profit that exists to uphold the interests of Singapore composers, foster creation of new music, and promote interest in Singapore’s new music scene both locally and abroad. Through our programmes, we provide avenues for professional development of local composers at various stages of their career, create platforms for them to present their works locally and abroad, and conduct digital outreach with the public to build awareness of Singapore composers and their works.

Development Programmes

Young Composers Forum

A mentorship programme for young composers. Participants will be guided through a 6-month creative period, writing and workshopping new pieces under the tutelage of senior composer mentors, to be premiered by the year’s ensemble in residence at the Singapore Composers Festival. The 3rd edition of the YCF is currently ongoing and features a partnership with the SYC Ensemble Singers.

CSS Composition Prize

A biennial competition featuring a different theme and partner each time. The ongoing 2025 Giam-Lim Composition Prize is jointly organised with the award-winning TENG company, seeking entries under the theme of Chinese-Western fusion. The winner will receive a $2,000 commission fee and will be added to The TENG Ensemble’s composer repertoire for future performances.

CSS Composer Lab

A workshop series allowing composers to try out and get feedback on their works with visiting guest performers. Through these workshops, we allow composers the opportunity to garner practical and technical insight from professional musicians and better envision how their music can be brought off the page and onto the stage. Our upcoming workshop features Darragh Morgan and Mary Dullea of the critically acclaimed Fidelio Trio.

CSS Connects

CSS Connects (previously known as CSS Presents) is a platform for CSS composers to share their expertise with each other and with members of the public.  Through these workshops, we provide members of the community and beyond with not just the opportunity to gain exposure and deepen their craft, but also to connect with and engage in creative exchange with other professionals.

Say Say Borak

Taking place between 2019 and 2023, Say Say Borak was a series of musical discussion-seminars on new music in Singapore. Originally meant as a monthly gathering of artists seeking inspirations, the project later expanded to include the wider public, encouraging them to engage with musical scholarship through accessible online seminar-discussions hosted on our YouTube channel.

Other Workshops

Outside of our workshop series, we also organize one-off workshops individually and in partnership with other organizations. Examples include the 36th CANZ Composers Workshop hosted in Nelson, New Zealand, in collaboration with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) and Composers Association of New Zealand (CANZ).

Platform Programmes

Singapore Composers Festival

A celebration of Singapore composers and regional new music. Consisting of a vivid line-up of workshops and performances, the opening concert typically premieres works from the Young Composers Forum, while the closing concert draws together members of our society with a regional composers collective.

31st Asian Composers League Festival

Last hosted in Singapore for its 31st edition, composers from the ACL’s 14 member states flew to Singapore for the three-day festival, which featured a symposium and eight concerts organized in collaboration with Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Philharmonic Winds, and other prominent music groups.

Feature Concerts

We organize a range of ad-hoc concerts individually and in partnership with other collectives. Past concerts include Dialogue and Reflections, organized in partnership with ACL-Korea, and our 10th Anniversary concert. Through our concerts, we showcase the diversity of local new music, foster cultural exchange, and provide a platform for composers to showcase their work and engage new audiences.

Outreach Programmes

Composer of the Month

A monthly series showcasing the lives and works of living Singapore composers. Here, you will find short interviews featuring Singapore’s best and upcoming CSS composers, where they share their journeys, inspirations, heroes and hobbies as they pursue their journey of creating new sounds.

CSS Reviews

CSS Reviews is a CSS writing initiative, providing reviews of concerts and events featuring new music, as well as “what-to-expect” guides for audience members who are interested in attending these events but feel daunted by new music!

CSS Score Follower

Every month, we post a video on our YouTube channel of a performance of a work by a local composer, with the score overlaid so viewers can follow along. Our goal is to give our members more exposition, bring Singaporean music to a wider audience, and also serve as an archival of our Singapore compositions.

Composing Monumentality

An online lecture-seminar series chronicling the major accomplishments of pioneer composers after Singapore’s independence towards the building of a canon or standard repertory. Through these public forums, we hoped to raise awareness of their historical achievements for younger generations of Singaporeans.

Broadcast

Broadcast was a four-episode online interview series hosted on our YouTube channel. Featuring hour-long video interviews, we ask composers and music experts the tough questions, delving into the philosophical, esoteric, and very often the critical of music, all in the pursuit of new sounds, and self-discovery.

CSS Showcases SG New Music Talents

A digital concert programme showcasing works & ideas for new music by Singaporean composers, produced under support of the National Arts Council’s Digital Presentation Grant (DPG) during the COVID-19 lockdowns.
