Under the guidance of SCO’s Music Director and Composer-in-Residence, the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) Composer Workshop offers a stimulating platform for aspiring young composers to gain theoretical and practical experience scoring for the Chinese orchestra.
The workshop begins with seminars on the characteristics and techniques of Chinese musical instruments, as well as composition and orchestration skills. Participants will have the opportunity to consult with the Composer-in-Residence about their drafts. Finally, eight works will be selected to be played by SCO in a reading session.
This programme will be livestreamed on SCO’s Facebook, Official WeChat account and NetEase.
Composer Workshop Day 1 – Seminar and Q&A Session

Speaker: WANG Chenwei (CSS Member), SCO Composer-in-Residence. Although the Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Hakka and Hainanese dialect groups form the majority of Singapore’s Chinese population, their traditional music is unfamiliar to the mainstream Chinese music community in Singapore. This seminar discusses Singaporean Chinese identity and introduces the traditional musical genres of the above dialect groups. Drawing on his new composition Lion City Rhapsody as a case study, the speaker demonstrates how such musical elements can be integrated into Chinese orchestral composition and present a unique Nanyang musical style.
