(ve), by Xiao Wen | CSS Score Follower Videos

Thank you to Xiao Wen for submitting this exciting addition to the Score Follower series! (ve) is the movement for flute solo in one of Xiao Wen’s larger pieces, th_ri(ve).

“th_ri(ve) is a piece that was written very structurally and each movement was written independently, so in the beginning there was a lack of conscious decision-making on what role each movement would play in the overall piece. However, I focused largely on characterising each movement distinctly, learning how to achieve each character through instrumentation, voice-leading, articulation and more. By the time I wrote (ve) which is the movement for solo flute, I saw myself being able to express many more nuances in the music compared to when composing for the other movements at the beginning of the semester. th_ri(ve) to me is a reflection of progress and a lens into what I can expand on in the future.”

The Score Follower video series features new works by Singaporean composers every month, so be sure to check out the playlist for more compositions, and subscribe to our channel if you’d like to be notified of new videos!
