Join the musicians of the Singapore Symphony for a truly inspiring evening, starting with Deep Dive, an SSO commission by Singaporean composer and CSS Member Joyce Koh. Widely regarded as one of the greatest piano virtuosos of his era, Hummel’s Piano Quintet in E-flat minor is an efferverscent masterpiece, showcasing the piano in its full power. The evening ends with one of the most beloved works of the piano trio genre, Brahms’s heartfelt First Piano Trio.
Date: Friday, 25 April 2025, 7.30pm
Venue: Victoria Concert Hall
Programme notes by composer, Joyce Beetuan Koh:
“For this commission, I was given the freedom to choose any instrumental combination. Leaning on my fascination and affection for the cello and its rich, versatile timbre, I allowed its sonic palette to guide my musical choices, shaping the ensemble’s colour and direction. The bassoon, horn, and harp emerged as natural companions.
The title of the work, Deep Dive, reflects a personal contemplation. In the early stages of composition, I underwent a cathartic experience that brought a profound sense of release and emotional clarity. I lived through it with this thought:
Dive, deep
…breathe…
don’t look back”
