The Monash Animated Notation Ensemble (MANE) is an ensemble of staff, postgraduate students and alumni that resides at Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music and Performance at Monash University. It focuses exclusively on music that is scored using animated notation. Animated notation can be defined  as “a predominately graphic music notation that engages dynamic characteristics on screen media” (Hope, 2019).

Established in 2019, the ensemble is directed by Professor Cat Hope. It has a flexible instrumentation that currently features cello, viola/violin, double bass, trumpet, flute, clarinet and electronics but can grow to include other instruments. In 2020 the ensemble commissioned their first new work, awarded to Victorian composer Jaslyn Robertson.
In 2021, MANE will offer a commission to an emerging composer of any nationality. This $2000 prize is for a 5-8 minute work which will be performed and recorded by the ensemble. Female and gender nonconforming composers are encouraged to apply. There is no age limit for this prize. Emerging is defined as “within 5 years of working in the field of animated notation”.
